Bypolls to 6 Rajya Sabha seats on December 20: EC
NEW DELHI: The Election Commission on Tuesday announced snap elections for six Rajya Sabha seats – three from Andhra Pradesh and one each from Odisha, West Bengal and Haryana. Elections will be held on December 20 for the seats left vacant due to the resignation of the respective MPs.
The three seats in Andhra fell vacant after YSR Congress Party MPs who represented them — Venkataramana Rao Mopidevi, Beedha Masthan Rao Yadav and Ryaga Krishnaiah — resigned in August and September and switched their allegiance to TDP.
In Odisha, Sujeet Kumar had resigned from the Rajya Sabha in September after quitting BJD and joining BJP. The vacancy in West Bengal was caused by the resignation of ex-bureaucrat Jawahar Sircar in September. In Haryana, the only vacancy arose due to the resignation of Krishan Lal Panwar from the RS after his election to the assembly.
