The bridge built in 1874 over Ganga is closed for 3.5 years and collapses in Kanpur
Part of one British era bridge over the Ganga, which was the main link between Unnao and Kanpur before it was closed to traffic more than 3.5 years ago after gorges developed, collapsed on Tuesday, Faiz Siddiqui reported. No untoward incident was reported. The incident sparked a commotion in the Shuklaganj area, with onlookers taking videos and sharing images on social media. They also narrated its history, and how the bridge, built in 1874 by the Awadh and Rohilkhand Limited Company during British rule, survived for almost 150 years. No official statement has been issued. The government is now demolishing the collapsed section, taking into account the safety of river vessels and swimmers below.
