High demand for premium notebooks in India, market analysis suggests
PC shipments in India hit a record high in the third quarter (Q3) of 2024, according to an analysis by a market research firm. HP maintained its lead from last quarter in the overall PC category, which includes desktops, notebooks and workstations, with more than one million shipments. The festive sales were attributed to growing demand for premium notebooks priced above $1,000 (approximately Rs. 84,000), which translates into an increase of 7.6 percent year-on-year (year-on-year). This information comes from IDC’s Worldwide Quarterly Personal Computing Device Tracker, which notes that commercial and business segments recorded growth of 4.4 percent year-on-year and 9.6 percent year-on-year. percent annualized, respectively. The decline in the consumer segment is reportedly organic and marginal as suppliers did not have excess inventory in Q3 2024.
Desktop shipments fell 8.1 percent year over year. However, other categories such as notebooks and workstations saw marginal growth of 2.8 percent year-on-year and 2.4 percent year-on-year, respectively. Premium notebooks also saw strong demand, with an increase of 7.6 percent compared to the same period last year.
HP led the PC market in India in Q3 2024 with a 29 percent market share and shipped 1.3 million units. The report notes that the strongest demand was seen in the business segment, which grew 30.2 percent year-on-year. This, combined with the demands on the company’s consumer notebooks, helped the company achieve its third-largest quarter ever. Meanwhile, Lenovo had a total market share of 17.3 percent and the commercial segment a share of 20.3 percent, with corporate orders and good momentum in small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) attributed as contributing factors.
Acer Group was in third place together with Dell Technologies with a market share of 14.6 percent. Asus took fifth position with a market share of 9.7 percent, but experienced a decline of 22.3 percent year-on-year.
