Shocking moment woman is thrown from car window during high-speed crash on Melbourne’s West Gate Freeway
Shocking footage has emerged of the terrifying moment a passenger was thrown from a car after the vehicle crashed into a barrier along a busy highway in broad daylight.
The horror collision took place near the Grieve Parade exit, on the West Gate Freeway at Altona in Melbourne’s south-west in October 2023.
Shortly before the accident, the car was seen weaving across several lanes, after which the driver lost control.
Dashcam footage from a passing vehicle captured the moment the silver Toyota hatchback crashed into the roadside barricade next to the left lane.
The car struck several parts of the barrier before a female passenger was ejected from the car.
The video showed the woman rolling several meters along the highway due to the impact and lying in a fetal position on the road.
The woman miraculously survived and suffered only minor injuries.
The motorist who recently shared the dashcam with Wyndham TV claimed the crash occurred after the female passenger pulled the steering wheel.

The car stopped a short time later several meters down the road as dozens of vehicles drove by on the multi-lane highway.
The motorist shared the footage with Wyndham TV to highlight the dangers of reckless actions on the road.
The astonishing images have attracted more than 160,000 viewers since they were shared online on Tuesday.
Dozens wondered if it was the driver who was thrown from the car, Wyndham TV reported.
“How does the driver fall out of the passenger side when there is a passenger in the car?” one viewer asked.
Another added: “I’d say it was the woman who was sent away,” another user wrote.
A third wrote: ‘It’s not the passenger’s fault on the road [the] Director.’
Other viewers said the dashcam is a harsh reminder of the consequences for not only motorists but also passengers if they don’t follow the rules of the road.
The clip showed the female passenger rolling several meters down the road (pictured) due to the momentum before lying on the ground in a fetal position.
“This is why you wear seat belts,” one motorist wrote.
Another added: “I’m assuming there’s no seatbelt.”
A third wrote: ‘Seat belts are great, but only when they are worn.’
Others disputed whether the passenger was thrown from the car while one motorist revealed how they experienced a similar incident.
‘That was the driver of the car. I have [done] that previously… flew towards the passenger without a seat belt [side and] my car [turned] in a Tesla that drives itself,” one person wrote.
Several commentators were unimpressed by the collision, saying there was nothing ‘funny’ about the crash.
“They’ll kill the most people there. Take care guys,” one person wrote.
Daily Mail Australia understands Victoria Police were not aware of the crash as it was not a life-threatening incident.
It is clear that the police are conducting further investigations.
