The £2.20 buy-one-only item will remove condensation for good
With more snow and freezing temperatures on the way, households across the country are facing further condensation problems.
A regular fall and winter problem, condensation is the buildup of water droplets that form on a window when moist air comes into contact with a cold surface.
Not only can this cause an unsightly mess, but the water droplets can also lead to mold growth.
Windows are also often colder than insulated walls, which means there is a greater chance of condensation forming on them.
Poorly insulated attics can also lead to condensation, especially when the weather turns bad.
With snow and ice making the problem worse, thousands of people have taken to social media to ask for advice on removing condensation, while other savvy DIYers have shared their favorite solutions.
And some people have revealed that a ‘simple but brilliant device’ can help eliminate condensation – and keep it at bay for good.
Attic vents cost as little as $2.20 each and can help increase ventilation in your attic space, which then trickles down and affects the floors below.
One DIY fan said on the Screwfix forum after installing them in his house: “After a few weeks I went into the coop to check and the condensation was almost completely gone.
“Very impressed as the felt vents seemed to do their job and were quite easy to install.”
Someone else said: “I installed 16, eight on each side and two tile gaps on each side. I was a bit dubious about it at first, but it helped a lot and made a big difference.”
A third echoed: “Lap vents made a huge difference in the condensation in the loft. The more the better.”
A fourth wrote: “This is a great, cheap solution to a problem that could be a very expensive problem if left untreated.”
“These are simple but brilliant devices that have solved the condensation problem,” said a fifth.
Meanwhile, a sixth added: “Easy to install and a cheap way to deal with loft condensation. They have been installed for about a month and seem to be doing the job.”
If you have some money to spare, you can even invest in a dehumidifier to absorb stubborn moisture.
A dehumidifier, a winter product for many households, works “by sucking air from the room through a coil that is cooled to a very low temperature by a cooling system,” the experts at Breathing space.
The water vapor then condenses on the cold surface and the water drips into the collection bucket below.
While you can buy the handy winter gadget from many retailers including Amazon, you don’t have to spend a fortune as portable interior dehumidifiers can be purchased for just 99 cents at Home Bargains.
The ideal humidity range for a home should be between 40% and 60%.
Anything below this range can lead to several problems, such as breathing problems, dry skin and eyes.
Anything above that can cause condensation or even mold growth.
What is mold and how do you get rid of it?
Mold is likely to grow during the winter months.
Olivia Young, product development scientist at Amaze revealed exactly why this is.
“Unfortunately, mold is a common problem that many people face in the winter. Mold thrives in warm and moist conditions, so your bathroom is probably the most affected area.
“That said, most rooms in your home can be vulnerable to mold growth during the colder months.
“This is mainly due to condensation that builds up on your windows when you have radiators on.
“If you think about it, if the windows and doors are closed, there isn’t much chance for the air to circulate and for the moisture to come out quickly.
“This buildup is the cause of the dreaded mold, especially in bathrooms, as it creates a warm and wet environment that is a breeding ground for mold.
“If left untreated, it is not only unsightly, but can also pose a serious risk to your health, so it is very important that you treat it.
“The key to tackling mold is to act quickly.
“Try to come into contact with it as little as possible. So grab your gloves, tie your hair and get to work removing any signs of mold as soon as you notice them.
“To keep mold at bay, there are some simple solutions you can apply throughout your home.
“The first is to keep the bathroom ventilated. Yes, even in the cold winter months, try leaving your bathroom window open for at least 10 to 15 minutes after showering or bathing. This will quickly remove excess moisture and prevent mold from forming.
“If you have repeated problems with mold in a particular room, it may be that the humidity is too high. You can purchase a dehumidifier which will keep levels down and reduce the risk of mold returning.
“The golden rule to remember when dealing with mold is: the sooner you can treat it, the better. Leaving it alone will only make it worse, so never ignore it!
“To successfully get rid of mold every time, I recommend opting for the UK’s number 1 mold and mildew removerthat effectively removes mold and mildew stains almost immediately, without scrubbing.”
