Go solo in local polls, Shiv Sena (UBT) leaders tell Uddhav Thackeray after setback in Maharashtra municipal elections
MUMBAI: After the mishandling in the Maharashtra assembly elections, cracks have opened in the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance as the newly elected MLAs and functionaries of Shiv Sena (UBT) have urged party chief Uddhav Thackeray to participate independently in the elections to civic and local bodies, at least in cities where the party was till recently was a dominant force.
“Some netas and functionaries have expressed the view that Sena (UBT) should build the party… and contest all local polls alone,” Sena (UBT) MLC Ambadas Danve said on Wednesday.
Sources said Thackeray will take a decision on the issue soon as he has asked party cadres to prepare for the BMC elections, which may be held early next year.
Sena (UBT) officials said the party may contest all 227 BMC seats and give tickets to Muslim candidates instead of having an alliance with Congress, NCP (SP) and Samajwadi Party, which are currently part of the MVA. “We were together in the Lok Sabha polls and won seats. But in the state assembly elections, the results were different. We did not expect to face such a crushing defeat. So there is this kind of sentiment among the party workers,” Danve said.
