NEW DELHI: Deposed former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has condemned the interim period Muhammad Yunus government in the wake of the continued violent attacks on the Hindu community in Bangladesh following the arrest of the Iskcon priest Chinmoy Krishna Das.
Hasina said Chinmoy Krishna Das has been “wrongfully arrested and should be released immediately”.
Highlighting the murder of a lawyer outside the court in Bangladesh, Hasina said “those involved in this murder must be quickly found and punished” as the lawyer was only doing his professional duty.
She called the people involved in the lawyer’s murder “terrorists” and urged the people of Bangladesh to “stand united against the killing.” terrorism and militancy“.
“If the unconstitutionally usurped government of Yunus fails to punish these terrorists, it will also be punished for human rights abuses. I appeal to the people of the country to take a united stand against this kind of terrorism and militancy,” she said.
In the statement released by the Awami League on behalf of Hasina, she further said, “It is important to ensure the safety of common people. The current power grabs show failure in all areas. A top leader of the Sanatan religious community has been wrongly arrested, he must be released immediately. A temple has been set on fire in Chittagong. Previously, mosques, shrines, churches, monasteries and homes of the Ahmadiyya community were attacked, destroyed and looted. Religious freedom and security of life and property must be guaranteed to people of all communities.”

Earlier in the day, the Supreme Court of Bangladesh declined to issue a suo motu (voluntary) order banning Iskcon in Bangladesh.
The court made this comment after being informed that the authorities had taken the necessary measures in this case. Bangladesh Supreme Court lawyer Md. Monir Uddin, on Wednesday presented newspaper reports on the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (Iskcon) to the Supreme Court, seeking a suo motu (voluntary) order to ban the organization and impose Section 144 in Chattogram, Rangpur and Dinajpur .
