Bow ties are bigger than ever this year, and if you want a door display that’s simple and chic, a giant red velvet bow is a great idea.

We love this one from John Lewis & Partners. If you are handy with a sewing machine, you can also add your family name.

Would you like to make one yourself?

Geneva at Collectivegen.com has a fantastic tutorial here.

Before you’re talked into a mini Christmas tree on your front door, wait a minute!

Move identical plants from your garden and place them on either side of your porch in a more traditional style, or try grouping three plants of different heights on one side.

And whether it’s an olive tree or a topiary, adding lights to your leaves will instantly add sparkle to your porch.

But make those lights star-shaped and you’ll really win this holiday season.

As much as we love a wreath making workshop, they can be expensive.

So why not treat yourself to this oh-so-festive M&S kit? You can even order a few, open a few bottles of wine and invite the girls to your own wreath making workshop!

Or make like Dragons Den star and multi-millionaire businesswoman Sara Davies MBE and make your own wreath using an old coat hanger.

The results are quite impressive – check them out here.

You can of course also just buy a pre-lit streamer like the one above Festive lightsbut they are usually quite expensive.

Instead, try a retractable curtain rod from Dunelm for less than a fiver (or use one of the kids’ old pool noodles tied in place with ties), then decorate with green foliage such as holly and pine branches and bows made from old fabrics.

Add a set of outdoor lights for a tenner and you’re good to go!

Merry christmas!

Christmas fashion tips from an expert

CLEMMIE Fieldsend, fashion editor at Fabulous, has shared her top tips for looking fabulous this Christmas.

AVOID: Christmas sweaters
They are no longer a novelty, they have now become boring again and do not belong at a festive party.
By all means, go all in for Christmas Sweater Day for Save The Children, but never wear it before or after that day.

WEAR: Burgundy
At this time of year you can’t avoid burgundy and it is a luxurious, deep and rich color that is a welcome change from the Christmas red at Christmas.
Opt for silky textures or velvet for extra style points.

AVOID: PJs
The trend of feather-trimmed combination sets has had its day and is so dated.
This year, don’t break out your hair-plucked pair and buy a new set, instead, still go for the satin two-piece, but stay away from the plumes.

WEAR: Sequin dress
Try changing up the sequins a bit by wearing them with a different texture or color, for example a sequin skirt with a tight knit.
But if you really don’t know what to wear, reach for the sequins, it is Christmas after all.

AVOID: Sequin blazer
There’s nothing worse than showing up to a festive gig that looks like the hired entertainment.
Leave the sequin blazer to magicians and strict judges, but always opt for a classic tuxedo style or velvet instead.

WEAR: Bling pants
Last season, embellished jeans with diamond bling were having a moment, and this year they’re going to be just as big a hit.
If you don’t want gemstones pinging everywhere, try metallic PU pants.
