NEW DELHI: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national president Arvind Kejriwal launched a scathing attack on Union Home Minister Amit Shah, accusing him of turning Delhi into the “gangster and extortion capital” of India have made.
Addressing the media in Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal criticized the deteriorating law and order situation in the capital. He stated that in the past one to two years there has been a significant increase in gang violence, extortion calls on businessmen and frequent shootings. He further compared the current situation to the dominance of the underworld in Mumbai in the 1990s.
“In the last one to two years, law and order in Delhi has deteriorated. We heard that in the decade of the 1990s, the underworld dominated in Mumbai – there were open shootings there… We didn’t think that Delhi would face a similar situation, gangsters have taken over Delhi, businessmen are getting ransom calls and shooting is common . I came here (Nangloi) to meet Roshan Lal, who was shot at when he came to open his shop a few days ago. ,” he said.
The AAP national president further accused the BJP of stopping him from meeting the victim, saying, “BJP has sent thousands of people to stop me. I wasn’t allowed to meet him… Who is responsible for all this? (Union HM ) Amit Shah is in charge of law and order in Delhi and under him Delhi has become a gangster and extortion capital.
“Why is the BJP not allowing me to meet him? What are they trying to hide? I want law and order to improve in Delhi so that the common man, businessmen and women are safe. The people of Delhi gave me the responsibility of education , health care and electricity, which I have sorted out. The people of Delhi have handed over the responsibility of the law to the Center, which has deteriorated. People are afraid to leave their homes. There are more than one incident,” added Arvind Kejriwal to it.
Reacting to the allegations, Special CP (Law and Order) Madhup Tewari said the shooting incident in Nangloi, which took place two months ago, was resolved quickly with the arrest of two persons and recovery of weapons.
“We have received information that this incident (Nangloi firing) – a two-month-old incident – ​​is being brought to the attention again. We would like to make it clear that the Delhi Police took swift action and arrested two suspects within a day and also recovered the weapons. I don’t know why this is being highlighted again even though we have taken very effective action,” he said
Earlier, the Special Cell of Delhi Police had arrested two sharpshooters of the Jitender-Gogi gang on September 30, a day after shots were fired at a sweet shop in Nangloi in a reported extortion bid, police said.
Police recovered a semi-automatic pistol with five live cartridges, a country-made pistol with four live cartridges and a motorcycle used in the crime.
According to police, the two suspects are Hari Om alias Lalla, 27, a resident of Rohini Sector 20, and Jatin, 21, of VPO Mundka.
In an attempt to extort money, the attackers fired gunshots at the counter and employee of a sweet shop in Nangloi and threw extortion notes with colored photos of deceased gangsters Jitender alias Gogi and Kuldeep Fajja on one side and names of captured gangsters Deepak alias Boxer. Ankesh Lakra and Vishal on the other side, police said.
Police used CCTV footage from the area and manual input to identify the duo. Acting on a tip-off, the police arrested the duo from Rohini.
