The Collegium, comprising Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna and Justices BR Gavai, Surya Kant, Hrishikesh Roy and Abhay S Oka, took the decision at a meeting.
“While recommending his name (Justice Manmohan), the Collegium has taken into account the fact that the Supreme Court Bench is currently represented by only one Judge of the Delhi High Court. The Collegium of the Supreme Court has therefore unanimously recommended that Justice Manmohan be appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India,” the Collegium resolution said.
The Supreme Court currently functions with 32 judges, while by law it is 34 judges.
Judge Manmohan was born on December 17, 1962 in Delhi. He was educated at Modern School, Barakhamba Road and subsequently obtained his BA (Honors) in History from the Hindu College of Delhi University.
He attended the Campus Law Center of Delhi University, obtained his LLB in 1987 and enrolled as an advocate with the Delhi Bar Association in the same year.
He practiced primarily before the Supreme Court of India and the Delhi High Court in civil, criminal, constitutional, tax, arbitration, trademark and service disputes.
Judge Manmohan was a senior advocate for the Government of India at the Delhi High Court and the Supreme Court of India.
In January 2003, he was appointed as a senior advocate by the Delhi High Court.
Later, he was appointed Additional Judge of the Delhi High Court on March 13, 2008 and permanently on December 17, 2009.
