Ajit Pawar sets his sights on Delhi elections after Maharashtra managed to regain national party title from NCP
NEW DELHI: Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Ajit Pawar has announced plans to contest the upcoming assembly elections in Delhi in a bid to regain the party’s national status after a resounding victory in the Maharashtra assembly elections .
He announced on Thursday his intention to contest the Assembly elections in Delhi at a felicitation ceremony at the NCP office in Delhi, where Pawar also rejected the opposition’s election fraud allegations.
Outlining his views on the NCP’s revival, Ajit Pawar said, “We have to work harder and fight to achieve success,” he said, referring to the party’s loss of national status in April last year.
He also unveiled plans to hold a national convention in Delhi, marking the party’s renewed focus on expanding its influence beyond Maharashtra.
Pawar also emphasized the cohesion of the MahaYuti alliance amid speculation of internal discord after the crisis Maharashtra elections. “We are united. There are no differences,” he assured, adding that key alliance leaders would meet later that day to discuss power-sharing arrangements.
The MahaYuti alliance, comprising the BJP, Shiv Sena and NCP, won a record 235 seats in the Maharashtra elections, surpassing Congress’ historic victory of 222 seats in 1972.
Pawar refutes the Opposition’s allegations on EVMs
Responding to allegations of electronic voting machines (EVM) tampering made by opposition parties, Pawar dismissed them as baseless. “The opposition is blaming the EVMs for not achieving the desired results,” he said, pointing out that the same EVMs had facilitated victories for opposition parties in states like Punjab, Karnataka and West Bengal.
Pawar also refuted calls by the Congress and the NCP-SP to return to ballot voting, arguing that EVMs had proven reliable in numerous elections.
