‘Promised to take appropriate action against any company violating Indian laws’: MEA on US sanctions | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: India on Thursday informed the United States that it has a robust legal and regulatory framework in place that allows exports of controlled and dual-use goods and technologies. This follows recent sanctions imposed by the US Treasury Department on 19 Indian companies and two individuals, citing their alleged role in aiding the Russian military during the conflict in Ukraine. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said India’s export controls are fully compliant with international non-proliferation obligations.
External Affairs Minister Kirti Vardhan Singh, in response to an unstarred question in the Rajya Sabha, reiterated India’s commitment to adhering to global norms and said, “India is actively participating in major multilateral non-proliferation export control regimes (Wassenaar Arrangement , Australia Group and the Missile Technology Control Regime) and contributes to the development and review of their checklists and guidelines.”
The Indian government has assured the US that it is taking appropriate measures to prevent violations of export regulations. “The government is raising awareness among Indian companies about export controls, including through regular outreach events. We are committed to taking appropriate action against any company found violating Indian laws,” the MEA added.
Despite the sanctions, affected Indian companies downplayed their impact. Shreegee Impex Private Limited and TSMD Global, two of the sanctioned companies, said their operations would remain unaffected as they have no trade ties with the United States. Shreegee director Praveen Tyagi expressed confusion over the sanctions but insisted the measures would not disrupt their operations. Similarly, TSMD Global Managing Director Rahul Kumar Singh said ^{that their operations with Russia would continue unhindered.
India also reiterated its commitment to strengthening ties with the US. Singh said: “India looks forward to working closely with the incoming US administration to further strengthen the comprehensive global strategic partnership between India and the US for the mutual betterment of the people of the two countries and to achieve global peace , promote stability and prosperity.”}
