NYT Connections Today (Game #537) – The Answers
The answers to today’s Connections game, game #537, are…
- YELLOW: ENTERPRISE ENTERPRISE, ENTERPRISE, PROJECT, ENTERPRISE
- GREEN: UNITS HERTZ, MOLE, SECOND, VOLT
- BLUE: MLB TEAM MEMBER NATIONAL, RAY, TIGER, GEMINI
- PURPLE: FIRST WORDS OF HBO SHOWS BOARD WALL, CURB, GAME, SILICONE
- My rating: Moderate
- My score: 2 mistakes
This was another one of those games that hung on the edge until I got really lucky with a guess and cleared it with two tries to go. It all started well, with yellow (UNDERTAKING) and green (UNITS) both proving to be very easy. The latter in particular immediately struck me thanks to the scientific character of HERTZ and VOLT, although MOLE and SECOND were not so obvious.
However, after that I got stuck. I simply couldn’t see any connection between the words. I searched in vain for even two words that could be related, but found none. I lost two guesses by playing fairly random groups and somehow ended up blue on the third; it really was a completely random guess and so incredibly lucky. The connection, it turned out, was MLB TEAM MEMBER, with NATIONAL, RAY, TIGER and TWIN, but I never would have gotten that without luck. I’ve heard of the Yankees and that’s it! If Connections ever has a group on cricket (a much better sport) I’ll be all about it…

What is NYT Connections?
NYT Connections is one of the New York Times’ increasingly popular word games. It challenges you to find groups of four items that have something in common, and each group has a different level of difficulty: green is easy, yellow is slightly harder, blue is often quite hard, and purple is usually very hard.
On the plus side, you technically don’t have to solve the last question because you can answer it by a process of elimination. Plus, you can make up to four mistakes, which gives you some breathing room.
It’s a bit more complicated than something like Wordle, though, and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to trip you up with tricks. For example, beware of homophones and other word games that can obscure the answers.
It is playable for free via the NYT Games site on desktop or mobile.
