This mini lantern is great for camping or emergencies and is 25% off Black Friday today

I got this palm sized lantern for a go bag and stay box I spend way too much time editing. (Here’s the multi-tool I ultimately chose for my emergency kit.) It turns out I needed this little light before a full-blown emergency occurred. I’ll explain.

When looking for a portable light source, I didn’t want to spend too much money. Sometimes these cool little things come with premium price tags.

Someone gave me some advice that helped: Packing a go bag isn’t much different than packing for a camping trip. Both contain items you’ll need to survive some time away from home. With that in mind, I started looking for items that could do double duty, and the BioLite Alpenglow Mini rechargeable lantern of 150 lumens ticks both boxes. Best of all, Amazon has a single light in both Teal or Charcoal for $30, or 25% off, during the Black Friday week event.

Why I like the BioLite

This palm-sized light source is smaller than a tuna can and half as heavy, and I don’t notice its weight or size when I put it in my backpack. Charged via a USB-C cable, eliminating the need for chargers to keep track of, the lamp throws enough light for 40 hours on low and 5 hours on high before needing to be recharged.

I can vouch for that battery life. This summer we had major electrical work done in our house, and the power in our bedrooms was out for the better part of a week. I took this portable light source from our emergency kit and set it up in our bedroom, where it lit up the room every night, on a high setting. After three nights I charged it and put it back to work. I now also use it as a light source in the morning, when it is still dark when I wake up.

By default I can set the small lantern to white, or adjust the brightness and choose different colors, including a multilight cycle by pressing the top. (“A party light!” declared former CNET colleague Mary-Elisabeth Combs when I gave her a quick demo.)

The BioLite Alpenglow Mini 150 comes with a clever bungee cord at the bottom that allows me to hang the lantern from a tree branch or tent pole. It also has a battery meter so I can keep an eye on the charge. Now all I have to do is pair it a portable solar panel and I’m done.

Why the BioLight Alpenglow Mink 150 is a great gift

There are more than a few reasons why someone might want to have battery-powered portable lights on hand. And at this price, these would make great stocking stuffers for the preppers in your life.
