Aliens or a cult? New clues emerge in quest to solve ‘longest-running murder mystery’
New clues have emerged in the search for America’s “longest-running murder mystery,” which has plagued farmers since the 1970s.
Several states, from Kansas to Iowa and Oregon, have reported strange cases of dead cows being dismembered with surgical precision with their reproductive organs removed.
In many cases not a drop of blood was found at the crime scene.
The reports sparked fears that aliens might mutilate the animals, but a former Oregon farmer has suggested the cows were killed by a “sophisticated network of humans.”
Colby Marshall, who found five murdered bulls missing their tongues in 2017, believes cult members or a group that uses the animal’s parts for rituals are to blame.
“They use some kind of poison that causes the animal to become catatonic,” he explained.
“There’s no sign of struggle with the animal, so they shoot it or something.”
Marshall further explained that the lack of blood is due to the perpetrators sucking it from the animal’s tongue, which they then take “because that’s the only piece of forensic evidence.”
Strange cases of murdered cattle, with their eyes and vital organs removed with “surgical precision,” have plagued American ranchers since the 1970s. But new leads are emerging in Wheeler County, Oregon, local sheriffs said, amid a surge in new cases (photo)
The Wheeler County Sheriff’s Office is particularly baffled by a case of a cow in Oregon remaining in this creepy sitting position (photo). The animal’s tongue and reproductive organs had been removed in July 2020, they reported
“I believe aliens probably exist. And you know, they probably visited Earth,” Marshall said Fox News digital.
“Do I think they’re using their technology to go after free-range bulls in eastern Oregon? No, I don’t. I think they could use their technology better than that.”
The Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) filed its first cow mutilation report in 1974, with cases noted in Oklahoma and Nebraska.
That same year, at least ten dead cows appeared in Minnesota, and in 1975 thousands of cases appeared in Colorado.
Bloodless killings of livestock were also reported in 23 states, including Kansas, Minnesota, Nebraska, Texas, Oklahoma, Montana, Illinois, Wisconsin and California.
The FBI investigated the deaths until 1978, but never found a perpetrator.
But by the end of the decade, more than 10,000 cases of livestock mutilation had been recorded, mostly on small-scale farms in the West and Midwest.
Marshall has opened his own investigation into the crimes, believing the murders were committed by multiple people.
He explained that one person would have held the leg up while another made an incision and cut around the testicles to remove them.
‘Then you have to hand all that material to someone, because if you drop it on the ground you will make marks and blood. there would be signs,” he continued.

“None of that stuff is there, so I think there’s a team of people [that pull it off].
The murdered bulls also showed no signs of liver or heart damage, and none of those vital organs were missing when Marshall came across the carcasses.
And prior to the deaths, the cows “had been eating and drinking, and were now showing signs of stress.”
Marshall and his team took blood samples from the bulls within 24 hours of their deaths and found no signs of chemicals in the animals’ bloodstreams.
“Anything that is rapidly metabolized in the bloodstream will be undetectable,” he said.
“One of the things I think is critical here is that the venom they use metabolizes quickly.”
Marshall gave an example of a sedative used in horse racing that silences the animals for a few minutes so their hooves can be maintained.
“Within a few minutes it goes through the system, the animal gets up and they’re fine.
‘[In the case of the dead cows,] the animal doesn’t get up because they bleed them to death. At least that’s my theory.’
He also put forward the idea that the carcasses were never devoured by predators.
“The scavengers weren’t mauling the animals. The animals basically melted into the ground,” Marshall continued.
“That was always a headache for me.”
He further explained that the lack of blood may have been the reason predators left the dead cows alone.
But Joseph Laycock, an associate professor of religious studies at Texas State University, told DailyMail.com in 2023 that Satanists are unlikely to be blamed because the vast majority do not practice animal sacrifices and most of them even condemn the practice.
“There is always the possibility that teenage delinquents will harm animals in the name of Satan. But I don’t think that’s the case in this case. Teenagers would likely have left traces or other obvious evidence,” he said.
That same year, six mutilated cows were found along a rural Texas highway, all with their tongues cut out and not a drop of blood in sight.
