Navy seizes 500 kg of crystal meth from 2 Lankan boats
NEW DELHI: In another major drug bust, the Indian Navy intercepted two fishing vessels carrying 500 kg of crystal meth in the Arabian Sea. The Indian Navy took action after its Sri Lankan counterpart earlier this week relayed information that two Sri Lankan-flagged ships were suspected of smuggling narcotics, an officer said on Friday.
Extensive aerial surveillance by P-8I long-range maritime patrol aircraft and drones, based on inputs from the Sri Lankan Navy and the Information Fusion Center (Indian Ocean) in Gurugram, succeeded in locating the two ships on the high seas. As two Indian warships were also deployed, the two ships were subsequently intercepted and the naval boarding teams found the drugs on board. “The two vessels, along with the crew and the seized narcotics, are being handed over to the Sri Lankan authorities for further legal action,” the officer said.
