Three aerosol-free dry shampoos, great for your roots – and one leaves no residue
DRY shampoo is essential for my fine hair that can quickly become greasy.
While my favorite aerosol spray is great for my roots, it’s not so good for the planet. So, in an effort to be more sustainable, I tried out non-aerosol dry shampoo…
Budget
Klorane Eco-Friendly Dry Shampoo, 50g, £11.50, view fantastic.com: Of the three, this one has without a doubt the best packaging.
The large nozzle makes it most similar in application to traditional aerosol dry shampoos, allowing you to quickly cover your entire head with just a handful of sprays.
A little goes a long way, so it will last forever. There is a noticeable white cast, but if you do it before bed, it will be gone by morning.
What I didn’t like was the smell and how it left my scalp feeling dry, so it’s not something I reach for often.
However, a great first step to non-aerosol dry shampoo.
Middle class
Rehab Essential Dry Shampoo, 50g, £24, rehabyourhair.com: So I was a little skeptical when I saw the tubular bottle.
It’s definitely harder to use – there’s less room for air to get in and push the powder out.
As I discovered the hard way, if you accidentally hold the bottle horizontally, the powder flows out freely, which is messy.
Nevertheless, it’s my favorite of the three because it left virtually no residue after I massaged it into my head.
The others left my roots feeling a bit grainy, which I hate – although that’s helpful if you want more volume or to keep your style longer.
Luxury
Oribe Serene Scalp Oil Control Dry Shampoo Powder, 45g, £45, spacenk.com: I’m a big fan of Oribe, it’s one of the few brands that’s actually worth the high price tag – but that said, I’m not convinced by this dry shampoo.
It’s the only one I’ve seen where you press the nozzle down, but the hole where the powder comes out is small.
This means you have to use a lot of product to cover your entire scalp, which takes a lot of time and effort.
It also meant I had to work harder to spread the powder with my hands, but if you’re just getting greasy along your parting, I think it would be great for more precise application.
