When a celebrity influencer adopted Murphy, the adorable puppy, hearts melted across Australia. But then fans were furious when they heard what happened next…

A TikTok star faced angry backlash from fans after she returned a new puppy seven days after picking him up from the airport and showing him off to her 128,000 followers.

Sydney influencer Whitney Hanslow was crushed by fierce criticism after she gave Murphy the cocker spaniel back when she decided she couldn’t handle him.

She told her 120,000 followers that she didn’t expect the “mental strain” of getting the puppy – and said she now wanted to focus on “prioritizing” herself.

Hanslow later deleted all her posts about 10-month-old Murphy following the brutal online feedback, telling followers she would now handle the matter privately.

But followers of the content creator say this isn’t the first time Hanslow has thrown away a dog shortly after introducing him to her social media.

Late last year, Hanslow began regularly posting videos of another cocker spaniel named Winston, who appeared in clips from Hanslow’s new apartment tour in May.

But by June he was dead. Shocked fans learned of his fate when Hanslow posted a tearful video of her collecting his ashes after putting him to sleep.

“After the whole dog thing she officially disgusts me,” one viewer wrote.

‘Having her last dog put to sleep due to separation anxiety is insane and now getting rid of her dog afterwards [seven] to dawn.

“Honestly, get off the internet and stop posting about your life if you don’t want to get hate. I’m so disgusted and angry.

“She’s adopted puppies, used them for content, gets freebies and sponsored videos in return, and then gives them new homes.”

Hanslow revealed that she welcomed her new puppy on October 2, six months after Winston’s death.

‘Exciting news! Get ready for cuteness overload! Join me as I share the journey of preparing and welcoming my new 10 month old Cocker Spaniel puppy,” she posted.

Two weeks later, on October 18, she picked him up from Sydney Airport, shared two videos about the happy occasion and introduced him as ‘my son Murphy Rae Hanslow’.

But just seven days later, after the pooch downed a red savory drink and chewed on an “expensive pillow,” she had enough and sent him back to the breeder.

“She flew the puppy across the highway to be with her and a week later she wants to send it back,” said another outraged social media follower.

“The irresponsibility, the arrogance – I’m amazed.”

“She said the new puppy is scared and anxious of everything,” another added. ‘Cocker Spaniels are known for their anxiety and attachment issues.’

Hanslow gave a tearful explanation of her need to “prioritize herself” and said she never expected how much time she would have to take off from her work as a content creator.

“I know I work from home, but I just didn’t expect the mental strain,” she said at the time.

When angry fans began to question Hanslow’s motives, she deleted the video of her rehoming the pup, saying she wanted to “focus on the positives.”

Daily Mail Australia contacted Cocker Spaniel Rescue Australia, who confirmed they had not placed Murphy or Winston with Hanslow.

They said they were devastated by Winston’s death and were never contacted about rehoming before he was euthanized – something they specialize in.

Hanslow defended putting Winston to sleep, saying it was done on the advice of her vet.

“Making the decision to put my beloved Winston to sleep, on the advice of our vet, was one of the most difficult decisions I have had to make,” she told Daily Mail Australia.

“But I did it because I knew it was the best decision for him.

‘Both decisions were heartbreaking, but like any dog lover, I have to put my dogs first and make no excuses for it.’
