This was another fun Strands puzzle, with a simple theme in some ways, but more interesting than some for both the nostalgia factor and the fact that the era made it more difficult.
We’re talking about the ROTARYPHONE, a device that young people under 30 will probably only know from TV shows like Stranger Things. It really seems incredible that these were ubiquitous in the 1990s – or certainly the 1980s – but are now barely seen. On the other hand, it seems equally unlikely that people on the road won’t be able to contact you, or that only one member of a household can make a phone call at a time.
The theme clue here was pretty cryptic, but I saw RECEIVER by accident and that immediately gave me the concept. Then it was a matter of plundering my childhood memories of living in a world where you actually had to remember people’s phone numbers…

Strands is the NYT’s new word game, after Wordle and Connections. It is now out of beta so is a full member of the NYT’s stable of games and can be played on the NYT Games site on desktop or mobile.
