The driver of a stolen BMW is said to have beaten a police car and tore Bollards from the concrete after the Melbourne police saw him parked outside a 7-eleven.

Officers saw the number plates of the alleged stolen car while they were sitting outside the gas station on Toorak Road, in Hawthorn East, on Wednesday at about 12.30 pm.

When the 43-year-old driver saw the approaching police patrol, he jumped back behind the wheel of the Witte BMW and tried to flee the stage with his female passenger.

The BMW came to a halt between a bollard and the shop front after he had returned directly to the patrol truck, said the Victoria police.

“Police parked behind the car, in an attempt to stop it, when it is claimed that the driver has reversed the BMW, the police vehicle rammed several times,” said a spokesperson.

“The police pushed the BMW forward to stop further incidents.”

The store front, the BMW and the police car were all damaged as a result of ramming, with four bollards also torn and destroyed a metal container.

A rapid thinking shop-operator told 7News that he expanded the fuel pumps when he was worried that the driver would crash one.

The driver, from Langwarrin, and his passenger, a 31-year-old woman from Doveton, were arrested and taken to the hospital with non-lifferring injuries.

The couple has not yet been charged by the police of Victoria, but is expected to be interviewed by officers when they are later dismissed from the hospital on Wednesday.

Officers involved in the incident were not injured.

The Victoria police appeal to witnesses or people with images to contact Crime Stoppers.
