'Crowd was in control till actor arrived': Telangana police defends arrest of Allu Arjun in stampede case
NEW DELHI: Telangana police on Friday explicitly blamed actor Allu Arjun’s ‘gesture’ for the crowd going out of control and leading to a stampede at Sandhya Theater in Hyderabad during the premiere of Pushpa 2, resulting in the death of a woman and serious injuries to her son.
The stampede, which took place on December 4, claimed Revathi’s life and seriously injured her 13-year-old son, Shreethej, after a huge crowd gathered at the Sandhya Theater in Hyderabad.
Facing backlash over the arrest of the actor, who was granted interim bail by the Telangana High Court, the state police issued a release dismissing allegations that adequate arrangements were not made to quell the large crowd that had gathered to keep control.
Telangana Police said that unlike what usually happens before a mega event, the organizers “did not meet any officer and simply submitted the letter in the indoor section”.
The government said that when a large crowd is expected, the organizers “personally visit the police station/ACP/DCP office” to make proper arrangements, which was not the case at Allu Arjun’s event.
‘We receive a lot of requests for this bandobust (arrangement) including visits by some political personalities, movie celebritiesreligious programs etc., however it is beyond our resources to provide them bandobust for every event. In specific cases where a large crowd is expected or a popular personality is visiting, the organizer personally visits the police station/ACP/DCP office and inquires about the programme, depending on which we are conducting the bandobust. In this case, the organizer did not meet any official and simply submitted the letter in the indoor section. No details have been disclosed to the police, although we have arranged this appropriately bandobust for crowd management outside the theater,” deputy police commissionerCentral Zone, Hyderabad City, while explaining the letter circulating in the media addressed by Sandhya Cine Enterprise 70 MM to ACP Chikkadpally requesting bandobust on 04/05-12-2024 in connection with the release of Pushpa-2.
Police said the “crowd was well under control” before the Pushpa 2 actor “came out of the sunroof of his car and started waving at the gathered crowd”.
“This gesture attracted a large crowd to the main entrance of the theater. At the same time, his private security began urging people to make way for his vehicle. His team was told to take him back citing a large public gathering, but they took no action.” It and Allu Arjun were in the theater for over two hours. So it is clear that there was sufficient police presence bandobust was on the spot, it was his actions that led to this unfortunate incident,” Telangana police said.
The police also refuted that they misbehaved with the actor and claimed that they “gave enough time to Allu Arjun to “communicate with his family and wife” before he himself came out and got into the police vehicle.
Another issue that the police personnel misbehaved with Allu Arjun at the time of arrest is also not true. When the police reached his home, he asked for some time to change clothes. He went to his bedroom, the police personnel waited outside and took him inside. custody when he came out,” Deputy Commissioner of Police, Central Zone, Hyderabad City added.
