Soon after Rahul Gandhi’s speech in Lok Sabha, Shiv Sena MP Shrikant Shinde targeted Rahul Gandhi by quoting a letter from former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in which she reportedly praised the Hindutva ideologue. Vinayak Damodar Savarkar.
The Shiv Sena MP quoted a 1980 letter in which, he said, Indira Gandhi called Savarkar a “remarkable son of India”. “Was your grandmother also against the Constitution? You are in the habit of speaking against him. We are proud to praise Savarkar and will continue to do so,” said the son of Maharashtra deputy CM Eknath Shinde.

Replying to Shrikant Shinde’s comments, Rahul commented, “I once spoke to Indira Gandhi Ji about this. She told me that Savarkar ji had compromised with the British and wrote a letter asking for forgiveness from the British. She said Gandhi Ji was going to jail. and Nehru Ji went to jail, but Savarkar sought forgiveness.
A few minutes later, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju went to X and posted the former Prime Minister’s letter to Savarkar. “This document is for Rahul Gandhi Ji as he has made a false statement in Lok Sabha about Veer Savarkar,” Kiren Rijiju said.
Earlier in the day, Rahul Gandhi referred to Vinayak Damodar Savarkar’s comment that “there is nothing Indian about our Constitution” to criticize the BJP in Parliament. He also alleged that Savarkar was advocating replacing the Constitution with the Manusmriti.

“VD Savarkar explicitly wrote that there is nothing Indian about our Constitution. So if you (BJP) claim to protect the Constitution, you are mocking, defaming and disrespecting Savarkar,” Gandhi said.
