REVEALED: The U.S. Cities Where Residents Have the Best Skin Where is your city?

A new report details the 10 cities where Americans are likely to have the best skin.

For their rankings, researchers analyzed data from hundreds of cities across the country.

They ranked cities based on eight factors, including air pollution, UV levels and working hours, that can indicate stress.

Overall, cities in the west of the country performed best on the index — with only two of the top 10 in the east. None in the south.

Cheyenne, Wyoming, one of the highest capital cities in the U.S. at 6,000 feet, was ranked highest for its clean air, short workdays and minimal traffic congestion.

Billings, Montana was ranked second for moderate UV levels, while Denver, Colorado came in third – also for low UV levels.

The top five was completed by Albuquerque, New Mexico and Salt Lake City, Utah.

Experts from Liberty London, a fashion retailer who conducted the research, used statistics from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, satellite navigation companies and online weather forecasting websites for the analysis.

Other factors they analyzed were temperature, humidity, smoke percentage and the number of hours of sunlight per day in an area.

The skin of young people is firm and elastic because it contains many collagen and elastin fibers.

But from the age of 25, these properties can decline, experts say, because the body produces less of these fibers.

Fine lines can develop and as the skin ages, the face can lose volume.

This process can be accelerated by regular exposure to sunlight, whose UV rays damage the collagen and elastin fibers, causing them to lose their elasticity.

Air pollution can also cause the skin to age faster by releasing free radicals (or unstable atoms) into the air that damage skin cells.

And even stress can cause this, as it can cause inflammation in the body that hinders the ability of cells to repair damage, including those in the skin.

To protect your skin, experts recommend wearing sunscreen daily and keeping your skin moisturized every night.

Other recommendations include not smoking, eating a balanced diet and managing stress levels.
