A camogy final has been canceled in Ireland – after players from both teams tried to wear shorts.
Cork and Waterford players claimed that after the postponement they were “completely disappointed” by competition bosses.
Camogy Is the women’s version of swinging and is extremely popular in Ireland.
The teams had to play on Saturday afternoon in the final of the Munster Senior Club Camogie Championship.
But because players wanted to wear shorts in the warm weather, the game was called out shortly before it was called.
According to rules of the Camogie Association, players are obliged to wear skorts – a skirt cut to the length of the shorts.
Refusal to wear under the rules can lead to sanctions for violating rules for different opinions.
Munster Camogie wrote in a statement: “Because the current play rules of the game are still present and the players have indicated that they would not be willing to play the game in Skorts, the decision to postpone the game was taken in the best interest of all players and involved players.”
Players from both parties had made it clear in the structure of the game that they would wear shorts.
Cork -star Ashling Thompson told Her sport: “We are going to wear shorts and if we are asked to return to the dressing room, we will not do that.
“It’s not about our versus the association. It’s about standing up for what is good.”
The teams later wrote a joint statement in response to the delay.
It stated: “As a united group of players, we want to express our bitter disappointment that today’s senior camogy finale has been postponed.
“It shows little respect for the preparation of players, both physically and mentally to be ready for a provincial showpiece, to take this decision only 16 hours before the planned initiate.
“We feel completely abandoned. Both panels were carefully planned to peak today.
“Training schedules and workload must now be adjusted, while they don’t even know when the game will take place.”
A special congress will take place on May 22 in Croke Park.
Members vote on a rule with which players can choose between Skorts of Shorts.
Spend against RTE Radio One, Camogie Association President Brian Molloy said: “I feel very comfortable that we get the support [for shorts] To get it over the line.
“I do not establish the rules of the association. The rules of the association are laid down by the members and they do that in the congress.
“And my role as president is to ensure that those rules are respected and those decisions are respected about the congress.
“We have tried to solve this problem in recent days and it was difficult.”
