MoreHouse College, the legendary Atlanta School, called F. Dubois Bowman on Tuesday as his next president, while historic black colleges struggled with the intentions of the Trump government for campuses throughout the country.

Dr. Bowman, who will start on July 15, has been dean of the Public Health School of the University of Michigan since 2018. He is ready to take on the helm of Morehouse at a loaded moment in higher education, because President Trump wants to improve academic life and diversity, fairness and inclusion efforts had been eradicated on campus on campus.

Leaders of historic black colleges and universities, such as Morehouse, have been left to weigh Mr Trump’s dedication to their schools with the actions of his administration, including a proposal to cut $ 64 million in financing for Howard University, the lonely federally chartered HBCU

“The prospects for the future are uncertain for all of us,” said Dr. Bowman in an interview about the higher education sector, when he acknowledged that “the uncertainty is so broad in many respects that it is difficult to plan.”

“I think it is really important that the college tries to position itself and control what it can control,” he said. “That is, well -founded and rooted in its basic mission, the basic business model, if you want, and really try to guarantee a wonderful academic experience for his students.”

Morehouse, a sanctum in Atlanta for black men whose alumni the honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Including is one of the most holy HBCUs in the country and is generally considered an incubator of activism and social change. But Dr. Bowman suggested that he expected that the college himself would carefully choose his times to express himself – an attitude of many presidents, but an attitude that people could frustrate who have called for campus leaders to be more powerful defenders of higher education and liberal democracy.

“The primary mission of the college is of course education, so I think that is where things should be anchored,” he said, adding, “There may be times when it is important to really think and to articulate those principles and values.”

Morehouse expects to have more than 2,700 students the next academic year. Dr. Bowman, a biostatistician, said he wanted the campus to be one “where students can come from many backgrounds and perspectives, a space for open research to struggle and challenge and debate ideas, with an openness to grow and evolve.”

Dr. Bowman obtained a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from Morehouse in 1992 and wondered if he would ever return as a professor. After completing a doctorate at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, he was a member of the faculty at Emory University in Atlanta. He was the chairman of the Biostatistics Department in the Public Health School of Columbia University before he returned to his hometown, Ann Arbor, Mich., For the Decanate.

Dr. Bowman, 54, said that Michigan’s recent decision to leave her signature dei program had been a ‘non -factor’ in his choice to leave the University for Morehouse.

He will follow David A. Thomas, who took over it in Morehouse in 201 and announced his pension plans last summer.

A survey published by the American Council on Education in 2023 showed that university presidents had been in their posts for an average of 5.9 years, compared to 8.5 in 2006. Many university leaders say that their role has become more challenging lately. But Dr. Bowman, who has one son with a morehouse diploma and another who had now registered there, seemed fearless because of his debut presidency.

He said that he felt ‘a feeling of calling’, even with the obstacles that shadow many Hogeschool presidents.

“The role has always been difficult – certainly the case now, even increasingly,” said Dr. Bowman, “but I would also say that that is probably the most important leadership.”
