Former Premier League manager, 68, free from cancer after eight months of fighting

Former Ipswich manager George Burley received the All-Clear after his diagnosis of cancer.

The 68-year-old public announced his diagnosis in September But did not disclose the form of the disease.

He said: “It has been a difficult time, but I now feel much brighter.

“In fact, I can go to matches on Portman Road and I enjoy watching the team that plays in the Premier League.

“We are grateful to the club (Ipswich) for the support they have shown me and my family and I would ask that everyone is currently respecting for our privacy.”

Burley, who played for Ipswich Before you manage the club, six cycles underwent chemotherapy and an operation that left him in the hospital for three weeks.

But the former defender has revealed this week that he is now cancer -free.

He told BBC Radio Suffolk: “It has been a long way – it didn’t happen at night.

“It started almost a year ago where I had symptoms and didn’t feel great.

“It was great to get all the way in the end – I was very lucky with the amount of support I have had.

“My family has been incredible … and I am very well cared for.”

Burley felt unwell for a few months before he was diagnosed with cancer.

The Ipswich legend opened the early stages of his fight and continued: “In the end, when I was diagnosed, I thought I should go with it.

‘The people around you, you have to make sure you don’t go around [and] Hold their chin up.

“It is not easy because you don’t want to speak much about it in the first instance, but once you grow in it, people around you know that you are accepting the fact – and [you] Continue life as normally as possible. “

The Ipswich hero also said that he had “happiness” that his body responded to the treatment and believes that the fitness levels he built up as a player helped him with his recovery.

Burley enjoyed spells with SunderlandGillingham, Motherwell, Ayr United, Falkirk and Colchester United as a player.

But his longest term came in the form of 13 years in general on Ipswich.

After hung his boots, he spent eight years as manager of the tractor boys.
