A 23-year-old parapegical woman begs a Spanish court to give her the right to end her own life after her father has succeeded in blocking her euthanasia bid.
The woman, who was not publicly mentioned, suffered serious injuries during a suicide attempt in 2022 and was given the way to take her own life in July 2024 by the regional government of Catalonia.
Experts from the warranty and evaluation committee of Catalonia (CGAC) said at the time that the woman has 'full capacity, is aware and expresses her will reasonably'.
Experts from the board added that she was in 'an irreparable clinical situation' that causes her 'serious dependence, pain and chronic and invalidating suffering'.
Although she would die in August, the trial was suspended at the last minute after a legal objection from her father, supported by the Spanish base of Christian lawyers, a campaign group.
The father argued that his daughter suffered from borderline personality disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder with suicide thoughts, disorders that he claims to influence her judgment.
He added that it was “the obligation of the state to protect people's lives, especially the most vulnerable, as is the case with a young person with psychological problems.”
But the woman told the Spanish media: “I feel misunderstood by my family, I feel alone and empty, this situation causes me a lot of suffering.”
