Patient shot dead in Delhi’s GTB hospital | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: A 32-year-old man was shot dead by an unknown person in a ward of the GTB Hospital here on Sunday, police said. The victim, Riyazuddin, had been admitted to the hospital on June 23 and was being treated for an abdominal infection, police said.
The incident took place in ward 24 of the hospital, they said. There was one gunman, they added. Riyazuddin later died of the gunshot wound, police said.
“The PCR call regarding the incident in Ward No. 24 was received on GTB enclave “It is a police station,” said Deputy Police Commissioner (Shahdara) Surendra Choudhary.
“When police reached the scene, they found that a patient, namely Riyazuddin, had been injured. He was later declared dead by doctors,” he said.
The officer said that around 4 p.m., an 18-year-old man entered the unit and shot Riyazuddin.
“The case is being registered and teams have been formed to nab the culprit. Prima facie, it appears to be a personal enmity,” the DCP said.
In the wake of the to shootThe medical institution’s Residents’ Doctors Association (RDA) went on indefinite strike in protest.
Delhi Health Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj said a safety audit of all hospitals will be conducted and no negligence will be tolerated.
A hospital employee reported that some people pushed the doctor who entered the ward, shot the patient and fled.
“No one else was injured. SHO of GTB Enclave, ACP and Crime Branch officers reached the scene after being informed by the CMO on duty,” an official statement from GTB Hospital said.
A nurse on duty, who wished to remain anonymous, said the teenager entered the ward at 3:59 p.m. and asked everyone to remain calm and not raise the alarm.
“He grabbed a gun that he was hiding behind him, shot the patient and ran away,” she said.
The nurse said the sound of the gunfire drew a crowd outside the unit and one of them alerted police to the incident. “It was scary for everyone who was in the unit.”
The hospital’s RDA announced an indefinite strike in a statement over safety concerns.
“In response to a recent tragic incident in our hospital, where a patient was shot dead, the RDA has decided to launch an indefinite strike starting Monday,” the statement said.
“This decision follows repeated concerns about the safety and security of our workplace, which the Delhi government has not adequately addressed.
“Despite previous calls for stronger safety measures, this regrettable incident highlights a serious failure to ensure a safe environment for both patients and healthcare providers,” the report said.
