The brutal truth about Anthony Albanese’s failing masterplan to drive Australians into Teslas and other EVs

Anthony Albanese's ambitious plan for most Australians to control fully-electric cars now seems doomed, with the sale of one Tesla model that dives more than 80 percent in a year.

In general, vehicles on batteries had only 5.9 percent of the market share in February and fell from 9.6 percent in February 2024.

The figures from the Federal Chamber or Automotive Industries include EVs that are sold by Tesla and Volvo-subsidiary Polestar, using sales data that are supplied to the electric vehicle council.

They showed that Tesla Model 3 purchases fell by more than 80 percent in a year, while the sale of the model Y more than halved before the coming update.

Labor's new vehicle efficient standard came into force in January with the aim of defeating vehicle emissions by 59 percent in four years by manufacturers of car manufacturers who trusted too heavily on the sale of gasoline, diesel or even hybrid cars.

But FCAI director Tony Weber said that Labor's plan to push EVs had done little to encourage Australians to embrace electric cars.

“We have been in the new standard of the government for two months now, and although the delivery of electric vehicles from the battery has risen dramatically, the consumer's demand has fallen by 37 percent this year compared to the first two months of 2024,” he said.

'We knew that the range of EVs would increase and there have now been 88 models to the Australian market.

'Our serious care, however, has always been the number of EV acceptance and what assumptions the government had made in its modeling regarding consumer demand.

“This modeling remains secret.”

No fully electric vehicle was on the list of the top ten of the top ten of Australia in February.

But five models were available as a hybrid, including the Toyota RAV4 in first place, the Mitsubishi Outlander in fifth place, the new Chinese built byd Shark 6 Ute in sixth place, the Kia Sportage in ninth place and the Hyundai Kona in tenth position.

Tesla's Fully electric model Y and Model 3 had regularly appeared on the top 10 sales cards until last year, when Elon Musk's company came to Polestar at the end of his membership of the FCAI, with the argument that the makers of gasoline and diesel cars beneficited.

Separate data from the Electric Vehicle Council showed that only 924 Tesla Model Ys were sold in February, less than half of the 2,072 figure for February 2024, before the new renewed model was released in May.

The Tesla Model 3 managed only 668 sales, only one fifth of the 3,593 turnover a year earlier, which marked a dive of 81 percent.

The sharp fall in the Tesla sales has also merged with the close association of Musk with the polarizing of US President Donald Trump, who instructed him to run the Ministry of Public Efficiency to reduce the state.

The Electric Vehicle Council argues that plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, and not only battery-electric cars, must be classified as EVs.

Chief Executive Julie Delvecchio said that plug-in hybrids and battery-electric vehicles had a market share of 11.3 percent and not 9.6 percent as the Federal Chamber or Automotive Industries argues.

“Last month, more than 11 percent of the registered new car sales had a plug, much higher than we saw in previous years,” she said.

'Plug-in hybrid vehicles are largely booming thanks to brand new models-included the BYD Shark, the first PHEV Ute in Australia.

“We also know that Australians anticipate new Bev models, including the new Tesla model Y and a series of exciting new models from China.”

The Mitsubishi Outlander is available as a plug-in electric hybrid, while the BYD Shark 6 is the first plug-in hybrid Ute from Australia to make the top 10, with the equivalent versions of the Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux only later in 2025.

EV sales can be higher, but the emerging Chinese brands still have to provide their Australian sales figures to the Federal Chamber or Automotive Industries or the Electric Vehicle Council.

Last month, 94,993 Australian vehicles were sold, which marked a total decrease of 9.6 percent compared to the same month in 2024, based on FCAI data.

The sale was weaker despite the reserve bench that leaves the interest rates for the first time since November 2020.

Toyota, which has no fully electric cars, except the Mirai hydrogen fuel cell vehicle, was the best-selling brand of Australia with a market share of 20.5 percent in February.

With Tesla absent in the FCAI figures, Kia ownership Kia in fourth place, Hyundai in sixth position, Chinese MG in seventh place and GWM in eighth place, the bestseller brand that electric cars offered.

Byd, the world's largest producer of electric cars, did not make the top ten list for brands, even though he was an FCAI member.
