Sexual attacks on women have become more common in India, where the police registered more than 31,000 rape cases in 2022 – an increase of 20 percent compared to 2021, according to the National Crime Records Bureau.

The rape law was amended in 2013 to criminalize stalking and voyeurism, and to lower the age at which a person can be tried as an adult aged 18 to 16.
In 2018 the government approved The use of the death penalty for people who have been convicted of raping children under the age of 12.
