Cyber Security Firm Bijenkorf systems has published its latest password crack graph for 2025, built around a simulated attack with 12 Nvidia RTX 5090 GPUs.
The collection meals? If your password is short, simple and predictable, it will not be long. But if you already use long, unique passwords with a mix of letters, numbers and symbols, there is little reason to panic.
The RTX 5090 is the most powerful gaming-gpu from Nvidia so far, but in testing Hive Systems it doubles as a password crack machine.
Longer is much better
A hash that represents a password of six characters, made from numbers and lowercase letters, can only take 14 days to crack with a brutal power approach. However, add complexity and length and the timeline is growing rapidly. For example, a password of 18 characters with lowercase, songs, capital letters and symbols would last around 463 quintillion years to break.
Hive’s research models A worst-case brute force-valve scenario, where the hacker has already stolen a hashed password database and used strong hardware to guess the right hash. It no longer reflects usual attacks such as phishing or password reused exploits, but it emphasizes why short passwords remain a risk.
It is worth pointing out, such as PC Gamer Notes: “Passwords can be cracked much faster than the numbers indicate here, because the software could come across the right one earlier in the process.”
BCRYPT, the Hashing -Algorithm -BIEKORF that is used in its test, is often used to scramble passwords before they are stored. Although it cannot be reversed immediately, it can be guessed by generating hashes from millions or billions of possible combinations. That is where GPUs excel. Parallel processing makes them ideal for password wires on a scale.
Hive also looked at what would happen if hackers had access to much more strength, such as the 20,000 Nvidia A100 GPUs used to train Chatgpt-4. Even then a password with only 18 characters would only take hundreds of years to break.
So what is the lesson here? Password length and character variety – especially symbols – matters. And because consumer GPUs are only getting faster, it is a good time to use one Password manager And stop trusting something under 12 characters.
