Mullins' Thoroughbred struggled with the water and the early jumps, as well as Ahoy Senor who took a tumbling.
But together with Jockey Paul Townend, he closed the gap within the last pair of obstacles – until Inothewayurthinkin left after the last jump.
Cromwell told Racing TV: 'I am absolutely speechless. I was worried about the pace of the race on the better ground, but he just hung there, you know. He is a very good horse. '
Jockey Mark Walsh said: 'He jumped brilliant … everything went very smoothly and a nice position. I noticed that Paul's horse did not wear him and did not jump, so I thought: “we could have a small show here”. '
The chance of iknowthewayurthinkin in Aintree was cut after his unexpected victory in Cheltenham – from 7/1 to only 5/2 with a few bookmakers.
