The Russian captain of a container ship that crashed into an American oil tanker has been accused of gross negligence, the police confirmed tonight.
Master van de Solong, Vladimir Motin, 59, from Primorsky, St. Petersburg, Russia, will appear on Hull Magistrates' Court on Saturday, accused of gross negligence, said the police of Humberside.
A statement from The Force said: 'A study by Humberside Police supported by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) in the collision between a tanker and a cargo ship in the North Sea, off the coast of East Yorkshire, led a man who is being charged.
'The captain of the Solong ship, Vladimir Motin, 59 years old, from Primorsky, St. Petersburg, Russia, is accused of gross negligence and has been enabled in the police to appear tomorrow in the court of Hull Magistrates.
'On Monday, March 10, the Humberside police received a report around 11 am that a collision had occurred between the two ships, missing one crew member.
'Extensive searches were carried out by HM Coastguard to find the missing crew member, now supposed to have died.
“The family is supported by specialized trained officers and our thoughts stay with them in this difficult time.”
Ernst Ross, the company that owns the Solong, said earlier this week that Motin 'had helped actively in the investigation'.
