Xiaomi, Chinese brands lead India smartphone market in Q2 2022: report
The smartphone market in India grew 3 percent to 35 million units in the April-June quarter, with Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi leading the way, an IDC report said on Monday. According to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker report, Chinese brands now occupy the top three positions in the Indian smartphone market, with Realme and Vivo climbing the ladder while Samsung dropped to fourth spot in terms of volumes.
The IDC Report estimates that 34.7 million smartphones were shipped in the June 2022 quarter, up 2.9 percent from the 33.8 million units shipped in the same period a year ago.
Xiaomi shipped 7.1 million smartphones, making it the market leader in the Indian smartphone segment with a share of 20.4 percent, despite a 28.2 percent decline in volumes year-on-year.
“Xiaomi remained on top but was the only vendor in the top ten with a 28 percent YoY decline in Q2 2022. It faced supply constraints in the first half of 2022, especially in the sub-USD200 segment. But 2Q22 was the launch quarter of its Redmi 10 series, which together with Redmi 9A Sport and Redmi Note 11 accounted for 35 percent of its shipments,” the report said.
Xiaomi dropped to third place in the 5G segment, which accounted for 25 percent of total shipments.
Realme’s shipments grew 23.7 percent to 6.1 million units, giving the company a market share of 17.5 percent.
Vivo’s shipments rose 17.4 percent to 5.9 million units, capturing a market share of 16.9 percent. Samsung’s shipments, on the other hand, rose 2.7 percent to 5.7 million units, resulting in a market share of 16.3 percent in the June 2022 quarter.
“Samsung dropped to fourth place, recording a weak second quarter of 2022 with 3 percent YoY growth. Despite a revamped portfolio, demand remained subdued as ASPs (average selling price) rose to USD 250 (highest among the top five vendors). It maintained its lead in the 5G segment with 46 percent of its shipments being 5G smartphones,” the report said.
According to the report, the overall smartphone market in India declined 1 percent to 71 million units year-on-year in the first half of 2022.
