Xiaomi tops Indian smartphone market with 20 percent share in Q2 2022: CMR
Chinese smartphone company Xiaomi led the Indian smartphone market in the April-June 2022 period despite a 22 percent decline in sales volume, a report by Cyber Media Research (CMR) said on Thursday. Xiaomi remained on top with a 20 percent market share, followed by Samsung with 18 percent share. However, the Korean phone maker led the growth in the 5G phones category with a 28 percent market share in that segment, the report said.
According to the CMR report, 5G smartphone shipments grew by 7 percent quarter-on-quarter and by a whopping 163 percent year-on-year in the April-June 2022 quarter.
Apple topped the super-premium segment (Rs. 50,000-100,000) with 78 percent market share, with iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 series accounting for the majority of iPhone shipments in the quarter, the report said.
“5G-enabled smartphone shipments have been growing robustly in the past few quarters. With the completion of 5G auctions and the expected rollout of 5G services in India soon, there will be further momentum in 5G smartphone shipments. In Q2 2022, consumer demand moderated due to the overall macroeconomic environment,” said Menka Kumari, CMR analyst for Industry Intelligence Group, in a statement.
In the overall smartphone market, Realme shipments grew by 22 percent and the company retained its third position with a market share of 16 percent. Vivo and Oppo followed Realme at fourth and fifth position with 15 and 10 percent market share respectively.
Chinese feature phone maker Itel occupied the top position in the feature phone segment with 25 percent market share. It was followed by Lava whose shipment grew by 21 percent, helping the domestic mobile company to capture 21 percent share in the feature phone category.
Samsung ranked third in the feature phone market with an 11 percent market share, despite a 25 percent decline in shipment volume.
According to the report, Nokia’s shipment volume fell by 8 percent and its market share fell from 11 percent in the March 2022 quarter to 10 percent in the June quarter.
CMR estimates that the total number of smartphones shipped will reach 174 million in calendar year 2022.
“We expect supply constraints to ease somewhat in the second half (H2) of 2022 in the run-up to the holiday season.
“With major smartphone brands launching their flagships in the second half of 2022, consumer demand for the premium smartphone segment will remain strong and there will be a high willingness to switch and upgrade,” said Amit Sharma, CMR analyst for Industry Intelligence Group.
