The mummified body of a woman who was thought to have died 14 years ago was found in a flat Costa del Sol.
The grim discovery was made by a squatters who forced the lock on the building to gain access to his 11-year-old daughter.
The couple fled the apartment in Malaga on Monday afternoon when they met the body after warning neighbors.
Police sources said that skeletonization, which is the final phase of decomposition when the soft tissues of a corpse are decayed or dried to the point that the skeleton is exposed.
First tests by forensic experts dated the time of death to about 14 years ago.
Researchers say they suspect that the dead woman is a Spanish lady who would have been about 85 years old when she died shortly after losing her husband, although she should not be fully identified yet.
They are now trying to trace family members so that they can positively identify her and determine how she could have died.
The apartment block where her body was found has a high rotation of residents.
