A magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck off the coast of Peru early Friday and was felt as far away as the capital Lima, about 600 miles (900 kilometers) away, according to the United States Geological Survey.
The earthquake struck about a mile off the coast of the Peruvian region of Arequipa at 12:36 p.m. local time. said USGSThe Peruvian authorities have a tsunami warning on the country’s coast and warned that waves could reach the town of Puerto Atico at 12:52 p.m. local time.
After the earthquake, videos on social media showed furniture and security cameras shaking for nearly 30 seconds, as far away as Lima.
Aftershocks of magnitude 4.2 and 4.0 were also recorded near Arequipa, according to the Peruvian National Seismological Center.
Peru sits on a plate boundary that extends across the western coast of South America. The world’s largest recorded earthquake was a 9.6 magnitude quake in 1960 along that boundary in Chile, according to the USGS.
