A shattered widow has described the painful moment of watching helplessly how her husband is swept from rocks in rough seas, to never be seen again.

Monitake ‘Moni’ Karakaua, 29, was fishing with friends in salmon holes near Albany in the large southern region of West -Australia Anzac -Day When the tragedy struck.

His wife Tongauea and two children had monitored the group of the coast when he lost his balance and fell off the rocks in the infamous place in the treacherous surf.

It is clear that his rescue jacket was not blown up and he was unable to be established by friends who had jumped into the water with buoys to save him.

An extensive multi -day search has been launched, but the Fijische National has never been found.

Karakaua was just reunited with his young family in Australia because they went for them to start a new life in 2020.

The rest of the family joined the meat processing employee in Katanning, 171 km north of Albany only seven months ago.

Karakaua and his wife had recently celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary.

“I had tried to tell him to come back (from the rocks) to the coast,” his wife said 7news.com.au.

“I witnessed everything. It’s just devastating.

“I was helpless. My heart breaks. ‘

She described her husband as a workaholic, a man of faith and the ultimate family figure.

“Nobody can replace him, he is an incredible person,” she added.

Karakaua was now the only breadwinner for his family, who now returns home to Fiji.

A Gofundme campaign was launched by family friend Sharon Muir To alleviate the financial burden and to offer stability while his young family rebuilds their lives.

‘She is confronted with an uncertain future and the overwhelming responsibility to raise their children alone.

‘They are now confronted with the difficult task of leaving Australia and returning to Fiji, where they hope emotional support, extensive family and an opportunity to rebuild their lives.

“This is a time of enormous sadness and transition for the family.”

More than $ 5,200 has been collected.

Salmon holes are known as a picturesque but dangerous fishing spot, where more than a dozen people have died or missed since the 1980s.

In 2021, the state government made it mandatory for fishermen in the region to wear life jackets, after a two -year trial period.

Free life jackets are available for rent in Albany.

Parks and Wildlife Service WA warned of the dangers of the salmon holes only three weeks before Mr Karakaua was missing ,.

“Don’t risk it,” read the Facebook message.

‘Rock fish is extremely dangerous and people have lost their lives from slipping or being washed by large waves, gusts of wind and smooth surfaces.

‘Even quiet days can run quickly.

“Use the anchor points that are installed on salmon holes and wear a life jacket, or better yet, fish from the beach and keep the sand between your toes.”

It is not known whether the rescue jacket that was worn by Mr Karakaua was on loan from the WA government.

Daily Mail Australia has contacted the West -Australian fishery -Minister Jackie Jarvis for comment.
