A heroic student drowned after saving three women who came into trouble during a wild sea swimming in Cornwall.
Jack Edward Read was only a few days away from celebrating his 21st birthday when he traveled with the group of 60 members of Bristol University Students Union's Wild Swimming Society for a four -day trip in June last year.
The prospective brain surgeon, from crediton in Devon, died after he helped save three girls who started struggling against the strong currents just north of Northcott Mouth Beach on the summer evening.
An investigation into the death of the 20-year-old heard how the young man was suddenly flooded by a large wave and never appeared in the night.
The hearing heard that the beach had not been a lifeguard, as it was after 6 p.m. and lifeguard is covering from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the beaches of Cornwall during the high season.
Jack's mother, Dr. Dawn Read her son described as a 'great young man'.
His actions on that night were described as heroic, but Dr. Read wondered why they were needed and said that her son should never have felt like going into the water that evening on an outgoing tide. “

She called on questions about the risk assessment of the wild swimming risks and training of water safety and equipment that was provided by the Wild Swimming Society by the student Union to the Wild Swimming Society.
She said that so many lessons should be learned from the death of Jack, including improving safety for those participating in dangerous activities, including wild swimming with better information about RIP movements and tides that are provided.
Ben Pilling, CEO of the Bristol University Student Union, said that the Bude Trip had successfully run in three previous years, but that it would no longer take place.
Mr Pilling said that after the death of Jack, new health and security measures had been introduced by the Student Union.
He told the research that open coastal water events are no longer permitted to prevent risks with tides and currents.
The research heard in detail how on the evening of June 4 Jack, from Crediton in Devon, and his friend Zaid, in the water when three girls were panicking to panic after they had been brought to the sea due to strong cracks and currents.
The boys managed to reach two of the girls and swim back to the coast with them. Jack stayed inside to help the third girl who was still in the water and always panicked.
He reached the girl and both drove away and struggled a bit more to swim back to the beach as the waves got bigger and the weather conditions changed.

The girl he saved succeeded in reaching the coast, but Jack was suddenly flooded by a big wave and never came up.
Emergency services were called to the area and RNLI volunteers and the Coastguard -helicopter searched for Jack all night and again in the morning.
His body was discovered at Upton Beach on June 18, two weeks after his disappearance on the evening of June 4, 2024.
In her statement, Jack's mother said Dr. Read that her son had registered in Bristol to study neuroscience with a view to a brain surgeon.
She told the research that Jack had decided this career choice after viewing a TED talk.
She said: 'Jack had a great group of friends. He had found his people. He was happy and I am grateful for that. '
She said that Jack sent her sunset photos on the evening of his disappearance.
She added: “When I said goodbye to him, I had no reason to think he would never come back.”
Dr. Read said the beach was not bad bee and had a sign warned beach users not to go into the sea because the currents were strong.
The research heard that around 20 students from the Wild Swimming Society were on the beach that evening with about 10 in the water with different swimming skills.
She told the hearing that it is haunting her to think that while the couple struggled to come back and to go in tiredness and panic, Jack would have known that he might not make it alive.
'The Student Union may not be complacent about the safety of students and ensure that it no longer happens. I don't want other families to go through what we have experienced, “she said.
She added that Jack's death had touched so much and his monument was attended by 100 students while the students in his primary school had led that he had organized a fundraising in his name for the RNLI and had picked up more than £ 11,300.
Dr. Read said that a plaque at the university is now covered with so many fingerprints and kisses from everyone who knew Jack and loved.
“His death is more than a drowning by disappointing, as the investigation is likely to find. Three people live because of Jack. He always ran to danger if it meant he could help someone. That's what he did.
'Jack never had the 21st birthday party he had planned in our garden. Instead of birthday cards for him we received condolences, “Dr. Read read.
“I want him to be remembered for the three girls who would probably be dead if it wasn't for him.
“Jack was a Lord in life and as is shown in his death. He will be missed enormously by so many people.
“This was a dead dead. If the good risk was assessed and the students had received the knowledge, equipment and training, they would not be swimming there. '
Detective sergeant Tom Mcintyre, the officer in the business, said he was not aware of any signposting on the beach about possible dangers or asking beachgoers to prevent them from going into the sea. He said there was no sign of third -party involvement and there were no alcohol or drugs involved.
DS Mcintyre told the research that Jack's actions had been downright heroic.
He said, “This was an event when students went to the area for a dive and Jack repeatedly entered the water to save others in trouble in the water and during those efforts he himself got into trouble and did not succeed in getting out of it.”
Assistant coroner for Cornwall and the islands of Scilly Emma Hillson said a death of a wrong performance, said that Jack had put himself in danger to try to help others, but died as a result.
She said: “He had the brave intention to enter the water to help others in trouble. He put his own safety in danger to help others who led to this tragic outcome. '
