Gmail for Android may get reply suggestions and other Gemini AI features

According to a report, the Gmail for Android app is likely to be upgraded with new features powered by the artificial intelligence (AI) model Gemini. A dedicated Gemini button is tipped to come to the Android app that could offer more functionality than just generating email digests, with the ability to process “non-email queries.” These additions are reportedly part of an update that is currently only accessible to limited users and could eventually be rolled out to all users.

Android Authority reports that the features were spotted in the Gmail for Android app version 2024.05.26.638440827 and were activated after enabling some flags. The update brings notable AI capabilities via the Gemini button, which was already available for Workspace users but recently arrived in another beta version of Gmail for Android.

Three new quick prompts are reportedly being introduced: Summarize this email, Show the following stepsAnd Suggest an answerTapping on any of the options mentioned above will start a conversation with the AI chatbot.

The Gemini button can also be used to generate replies to emails and customize them for different tones, the publication said. It can also access content from previous emails, but on a “limited” scale.

Interestingly, Google has reportedly introduced the Gemini button in the beta app version 2024.05.19.635289964 of Gmail for Android. It would appear as a star-shaped icon on the top banner, preceding the archiving option.

Gemini on Google Messages

Google has also reportedly rolled out the Gemini integration in Google Messages. First previewed at Google I/O 2024, the feature can perform message-related tasks such as composing, rephrasing, and rewriting them with different tones. Additionally, users can also have conversations and ask to retrieve information from the web.

However, it cannot be used in group conversations or group chats on WhatsApp. It also does not have access to voice messages, the report suggests. Google has reportedly rolled out the feature in most regions, except India, the UK, Switzerland and the EEA region comprising the 27 EU countries, as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway.
