Thousands are feared after an enormous earthquake that affected Thailand and Myanmar this morning, destroy buildings and fear that dams were still collapsing, which led to catastrophic floods.

The US Geological Survey probably predicted losses from between 10,000 and 100,000 just after the 7.7 earthquake near Mandalay, the second largest city in Myanmar.

While millions of the shock were shaking, a second earthquake with a size of 6.4 the area 12 minutes later, the GFZ of USGs and Germany said.

Civil servants in a large hospital in Nayyyidaw, the capital, explained a 'mass victim area', with the death toll that would be expected to rise after buildings fell and spread debris.

Professor Ian Main, personal chairman in Seismology and Rock Physics, School of Geosciences, at the University of Edinburgh said in the immediate aftermath that the damage is likely to be 'very serious' near the epicenter.

The power ensured that a mosque collapsed in Mandalay, stating at least ten worshipers that they were killed.

Shocking images showed that employees in neighboring Thailand then fled a high -rise building under construction around them.

At least three people were killed when the skyscraper was overthrown. Local authorities said that dozens of employees from the site were saved, although 90 are still missing.

In Thailand, alarms went into buildings when the earthquake struck local time around 1.30 pm.

Shocked residents were evacuated by stairs of high -rise buildings and hotels in densely populated Central Bangkok.

They stayed on the street, looking for shadow of the afternoon sun in the minutes after the earthquake.

The earthquake was powerful enough to control water from swimming pools, somewhat high above the street in high -rise buildings, while the Tremor shook.

Witnesses in Bangkok said that people ran into the street in a panic, many of them hotel guests in bathrobes and swimming costumes while water flowed out of a raised swimming pool in a luxury hotel.

“Suddenly the entire building started to move, there was shouts and a lot of panic,” said Fraser Morton, a tourist from Scotland, who was in one of the many shopping centers of Bangkok in front of camera equipment.

“At first I started walking calmly, but then the building really started to move, yes, a lot of shouting, a lot of panic, people who ran the wrong way through the escalators, banging and crashing in the shopping center.”

Just like thousands of others in the center of Bangkok, Morton sought refuge in Benjasiri Park – away from the tall buildings around.

“I went outside and then looked up to the building and the entire building moved, dust and debris, it was pretty intense,” he said. “A lot of chaos.”

The earthquake met Myanmar as it is in the handles of a civil war.

In a general hospital of 1,000 beds in the capital of the country, rows were treated outside the Emergency Department, some wriggled with pain, others were still while family members tried to comfort them.

In Mandalay, the second largest city in the country and close to the epicenter, the earthquake damaged part of the former Royal Palace and buildings, according to videos and photos released on Facebook Social Media.

Although the area is prone to earthquakes, it is generally sparsely populated and most houses are low -rise structures.

In the Sagaing region just southwest of Mandalay, a 90-year-old bridge collapsed, and some parts of the highway that connect Mandalay and the largest city in Myanmar, Yangon, were also damaged.

In Nijypyitaw, the earthquake damaged religious shrines, causing parts that are shifted to the ground, and some houses.

The earthquake damaged buildings in Bangkok and forced the suspension of a few metro and light rail services in the city.

Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinatra said on Friday that she had interrupted an official visit to the southern island of Phuket to hold an 'urgent meeting' after the earthquake, according to a post on X.

According to Beijing's Quake Agency, which said the shock 7.9 was measured in size in the province of Yunnan in China.

Earthquakes are relatively common in Myanmar, where six strong earthquakes of 7.0 Magnitude or more affected between 1930 and 1956 near the Sagaing error, which according to the USGS runs from north to south through the center of the country.

A powerful earthquake of 6.8 magnitude in the old capital Bagan in Central Myanmar killed three people in 2016, also to overthrow towers and crumbling temple walls on the tourist destination.

The breakneck pace of development in the cities of Myanmar, combined with crumbling infrastructure and poor urban design planning, has also made the most populated areas of the country vulnerable to earthquakes and other disasters, experts say.

The impoverished Southeast -Asian nation has a tense medical system, especially in its rural states.
