Why Everyone Loves M&S
Deputy fashion editor Abby McHale told Fabulous why M&S is the store of the moment. She explained:
“M&S has really done a great job this season, there are so many good products to be excited about.
“A brand once known for its ‘frumpy fashion’, although that idea has long since disappeared, it is now one of the leading high streets for women’s clothing.
“The handbag range in particular is super strong, with a 170% sales rate against plan, and many more designer dupes at a fraction of the price.
“The brand is also now #1 for style perceptions, up from #3 last year. This is due to a very strong design team that is focused on modernizing the brand, taking into account not only how the pieces look, but also how easy they are to wear.
“Price is also an important factor as you can get a lot of good quality pieces for under £30.
“Having given us a sneak peek at the upcoming collection, there are so many more amazing pieces to keep an eye out for in the coming months.
“Think leopard print dresses, colourful co-ords, embroidered boho jackets, plus lots of swimwear and great accessories, as well as great wardrobe pieces that will last year after year.”
One person said: “This dress is very flattering and looks beautiful. It is very light weight so ideal for holidays. Highly recommended.”
Another added: “I love this dress, it doesn’t wrinkle and drapes beautifully – I feel good in it!!”
Is supermarket fashion the new high street?
DEPUTY Fashion Editor Abby McHale says:
Supermarkets have really upped their game when it comes to their fashion lines. These days, when you pop in to do your weekly shop, you can also pick up a selection of wallet-friendly, stylish items for the whole family.
Tesco has just announced a 0.7 percent rise in the quarter thanks to ‘strong growth in clothing’ and M&S has earned the title of the number one destination for womenswear on the high street.
Asda’s George clothing line earned the supermarket £1.5m in 2023, 80 per cent of clothes at Sainsbury’s were sold at full price rather than discounted, and sales of Nutmeg at Morrisons have also risen by 2 per cent over the past year.
How is it that supermarket fashion is so successful?
The clothing is not only affordable but also of good quality, and much of the clothing is part of programs such as the Better Cotton Initiative.
They often stick to classic pieces that they know will last for years.
And because they buy so much stock, they can deliver quickly and the volumes are cheaper.
A third commented: “Beautiful summer dress. Light material. Doesn’t crease. Perfect for travelling. True to size.”
Someone else wrote: “This is a beautiful dress and so cheap.
“The fabric is of very good quality and has a vibrant pattern and color. The shape is very comfortable to wear and flattering.”
While one fashion fan beamed: “Beautiful dress and the color is very elegant, looks expensive.”
