Samsung led global 5G Android smartphone sales in February: Counterargument
Samsung led the overall 5G Android smartphone market in terms of global sales in February, according to data shared by a research firm. The South Korean company’s Galaxy A52s 5G was the best-selling 5G-capable handset, followed by the Galaxy S22 Ultra that was released in February. Meanwhile, the Galaxy S21 FE 5G, Galaxy A32 5G and Galaxy A22 5G were the third, fourth and 10th best-selling smartphones, respectively. Smartphones from Chinese manufacturers such as Honor, Vivo, Oppo and Xiaomi were also among the best-selling handsets.
According to a report by Counterpoint Research, the Android segment accounted for 67 percent of global 5G smartphone sales, with 10 of the top-selling handsets making up 20 percent of all 5G Android phones sold in February. With five of the company’s phones among the top-selling 5G handsets, Samsung captured nearly 24 percent of global Android 5G smartphone sales in the same month.
The Samsung Galaxy A52s 5G remained the best-selling handset of January 2022 — it was among the top 10 best-selling smartphones for the past six consecutive months, according to the report. Thanks to sales in South Korea and the US, the Galaxy S22 Ultra, which launched in February, was the second best-selling phone on the list and accounted for two-thirds of Galaxy S22 series sales.
Meanwhile, promotions in the US and sales in Germany pushed the Galaxy S21 FE to the third position, up from the 10th position in January. The Galaxy A32 5G and Galaxy A22 5G were respectively the fourth and 10th best-selling smartphones in February, owing to their sub-$250 (approximately Rs. 19,200) pricing, the report said.
The fifth spot on the list of best-selling Android phones for February 2022 went to the Oppo Reno 7 5G, which was the best-selling smartphone in China in the same month. Demand for smartphones remained high in China, where 5G penetration had reached 83 percent in February, but smartphone makers including Oppo Vivo, Xiaomi and Honor are reportedly looking to expand into new markets in the Asia Pacific (APAC) and Middle East and Africa (MEA) regions.
Two of Honor’s devices also featured in the list of best-selling devices for February 2022 — the Honor 60 and the Honor X30, which accounted for 30 percent of Honor’s smartphone share in China. The demand for the Honor 60 kept it in the top five best-selling smartphones in China in February 2022. Meanwhile, the Vivo S12 and the Xiaomi Redmi K40, mid-range smartphones priced at around $350 (roughly Rs. 26,800), were ranked seventh and eighth respectively, the report said.
