X may allow users to disable links in post comments with new feature
X (formerly Twitter) – Elon Musk’s microblogging platform – is reportedly developing a feature that will allow users to disable links in comments on their posts, according to claims by a social media app researcher. It is speculated that it will help reduce spam links posted in comments on posts on the platform by introducing the ability to block links natively. Notably, X was also recently reported to be working on a ‘dislike’ button for its iOS app, which would allow users to downvote comments.
Disable links in comments on X
The discovery was made by independent app researcher Nima Owji (@nima_owji) with a track record of discovering unreleased features on X. In a after On the platform, Owji revealed that X may allow users to disable links in post comments via a checkbox. A screenshot shared by the user suggests that it is under the Only accounts you name banner.
In response to a later quoted post, Christopher Stanley, a Security Researcher at X, confirmed its authenticity. “My team built this,” Stanley wrote.
It’s just one of the features that X is reportedly developing as it aims to realize Elon Musk’s vision of becoming an “everything app” that can do everything from messaging to payments, similar to China’s WeChat. The platform rebranded from Twitter to X last year, ditching its iconic “Larry the Bird” logo for a simple “X.”
Previously reported underdeveloped features of X include in-app currency that content creators can earn on the platform — an expansion on the existing tipping features on X. However, it has not yet made it to the platform.
Hidden Likes Tab
In addition to developing the ability to disable links in comments, X also made a major change last year when it added the I like this tab of the profile, albeit only for X Premium subscribers. However, earlier this year, Haofei, an engineer at X, announced that the tab would soon be hidden for everyone to prevent people from feeling “discouraged” for liking certain content. After the change, only the author would know when someone liked their post.
