A homeless man has been charged with murder after allegedly stabbing a stranger to death at a popular swimming destination.

Police were called to Frankston Pier, in Melbourne’s south-east, after reports of an attack just after 6am on Saturday.

A 45-year-old man from Cranbourne North was found unconscious and died at the scene.

Shortly after the gruesome discovery, police arrested a 36-year-old man on the beach.

The man, who has no fixed address, has been charged with murder over the elderly man’s death.

He will appear in Melbourne District Court on Sunday.

The crime scene was cordoned off Saturday afternoon as investigators and state emergency services searched for evidence.

“Detectives from the Homicide Squad are investigating and are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident at this stage,” Victoria Police said in a statement.

‘The parties involved were probably unknown to each other.’

A passerby remembers the moment they came to the man’s aid after the incident.

“I checked the guy out, but there was no sign of life… no twitching, no sound, nothing,” he told the Herald Sun.

“I didn’t know whether to stay with him or not. I just saw the guy walking away and I thought I couldn’t just let him walk away,” the witness said.

“He stopped as if thinking for a moment… and then walked away.”

He said the incident had lasted less than a minute and left him shaken as he had started fishing from the pier at 3.30am hours earlier.

“A few minutes before it happened, I was fishing on the other side of him (closest to the water’s edge),” he said.
