Cruise passengers share their WILDEST encounters on board – from farting at the buffet table to sex on deck chairs
Many cruise passengers have reported some of the rude behavior they have ever witnessed from passengers on ships, from people defecating in public places to farting at the buffet table.
Cruise expert Ilana Schattauer posted a video on her Youtube ChannelLife Well Cruised, in which she describes some of the wild stories she has heard from ships. Hundreds of people responded and joined the conversation.
Ilana says in her clip that many guests complain about the etiquette at buffets, with some saying they’ve seen people “passing gas” while waiting in line for their food.
Other complaints in the dining room included passengers cutting in line at the buffet, people eating from food stations or finishing their plates quickly, and others blowing their noses into cloth napkins.
One commenter noted that he gets extremely annoyed by “people who don’t wash their hands when they go to the buffet” during meals, while another said he doesn’t like it when small children help themselves.

They explained: ‘The little ones don’t have the motor skills to make a choice and move. Picking them up and holding them so they can make a choice is rude to others who are waiting!
Your six year old with a full plate of food does not need to grab 9 INDIVIDUAL pieces of bacon for his plate.
“Put them with someone else and get them some food. That happens at home, so let it happen at the buffet on vacation. Stop letting them touch all the plates, silverware, and serving utensils! It’s maddening!”
Another viewer shared a true horror story that took place during their cruise, which started over breakfast.
They wrote: ‘[I encountered a] someone who was so drunk that he threw up all over the floor before the breakfast buffet.
‘[On the] same cruise another man was so drunk he pooped on the floor on the carpet and another woman was so drunk she was laughing and crying late at night and couldn’t walk she was hysterical until she fell and couldn’t get up.
‘This all happened at NCL Prima in October 2023! NCL was awesome. Completely hazmat [response]: the buffet area was closed and passengers were diverted to another restaurant, the entire buffet was dumped in that area, all plates were removed, isolated and taken to the dishwashing area to be rewashed and sterilized, the floor, countertops etc. were cleaned and disinfected. Very efficient and very thorough!’

Ilana says there’s another thing many cruise passengers complain about: “seat occupation.”
She says this can happen on the pool deck and in the theater, and “people don’t like it at all,” especially if they’re “saving chairs for a whole group or family.”
A cruise passenger reported experiencing another type of chair activity while on a trip to Mexico.
They recalled: ‘I was taking a short walk around 9:00 p.m. one night on my cruise in Mexico. So many stars! As I was climbing the steps to the bow of the boat, I heard and saw two people quietly arguing on a lounge chair.
‘When I realized what I was getting into, I turned around and ran back to the busier part of the ship and then to my room. RUDE!’
Cruise ship elevators were also on Ilana’s wish list.
She says in her video that it is often overcrowded and that people forget to let others out before they want to go in.
The avid traveller adds: ‘The other point, and I think this is quite important, is whether there is a wheelchair user [or] If you are a scooter user, please let him in before you.’
One viewer, who was recently in a wheelchair and took a cruise for the first time, agreed with Ilana on this point.
They revealed: ‘My husband and I recently took our first cruise on the NCL Encore to Alaska. It was also my first time traveling as a wheelchair user.
‘The elevators were a challenge. I tried to be alert and not squeeze myself into a crowded car.
‘Some people were very kind and considerate, but others were extremely rude and pushed me aside to get in.
‘I would also like to add that I felt invisible when walking around the ship, people would walk right in front of me and cut me off, I often had to stop quickly so I wouldn’t bump into them. I will also add that the crew were all fantastic and went above and beyond to help!’
At the end of her video about rude behavior on cruise ships, Ilana reminds viewers to be kind and considerate to the crew, with words of “thank you” playing a big part.
She says she has often seen passengers behave “in a very arrogant manner and be rude to the crew,” which is “completely unacceptable.”
