What to expect
The Fed is unlikely to initiate a rate cut at its July meeting, while most forecasts call for a cut at its September meeting. Instead, the Fed is widely expected to keep its benchmark rate at 5.25% to 5.5%, as it has done since last summer.
The federal funds rate affects the overnight interest rates that U.S. banks charge to borrow or lend money, which has a knock-on effect on the interest rates on your credit card, mortgage, high-yield savings account and other credit products.
The Federal Reserve meets eight times a year. Each time, it meets to set monetary policy based on factors such as inflation, spending, unemployment rates and the overall health of the U.S. economy.
