Trainer Charlie Appleby’s words came back to bite him, because the favorite desert flower of Red-Hot Oaks was reversed by Ryan Moore on Minnie Hauk.
Speaking for the blockbuster, season-definating group 1, said Godolphin trainer Appleby that he thought Jockey William Buick would bring the race to bed on the 2F post.
But the 11-10 1,000 Guineas winner who looked great at Newmarket last month did not seem to be able to handle the Etsom Track roller coaster.
And by the time the 2F post appeared, she had a lot of work to do to chase Aidan O’Brien pair 9-2 Minnie Hawuk and 17-2 vertebra.
Desert Flower went to work, but much too late.
And by that time it was due to a fight between the two Coolmore runners with Moore, so, so strong in the finish, predominant about Wayne Lordan to give his boss an 11th victory in the race.
Minnie Hauk was cut until 16-1 for the arch on the back -the same prize as Coronation Cup winner Jan Brueghel.
The big conversation before the beginning was whether the previously unbeaten desert flower would remain the journey.
Former top Jockey Johnny Murtagh said on ITV that she certainly did – she just didn’t go the job.
Murtagh said: “You can’t say that William Buick’s horse did not stay – it’s just that the other two were superior.”
O’Brien said: “I am happy. Minnie Hauk is very stylish and Ryan gave her a nice ride.
‘He loved her the last day [at Chester] And then again today, so she is very exciting.
“She is clearly learning – she went to Chester and learned a lot and was still green, and she always improved from the middle of the race.
“What you like about her is that she is a great traveler, she has a lot of class.
“Ryan felt that he was very easy to go on her today and usually means that she will be able to get a few degrees in even higher class races.
“It is wonderful for the boys and for everyone to have such a glory.”
The big question now is whether the prevailing court of Appleby will handle the derby of tomorrow – or even runs.
The brilliant winner of 2,000 Guineas has doubts about the trip, track and go, with a Yellow weather warning in place at Epsom potential his participation in scupping.
Moore will ride O’Brien’s Delacroix in the world’s most famous flat race – but a draw of 14 has not been overly nice for him, because the couple goes for a hat trick in the £ 1.5 million competition.
