Wayne Lewis of Atlantic Starr died tragically at the age of 68 who announced the band as a deeply sad fans.
The singer and keyboard player was one of the founders of the New York Group based in New York, who found enormous success with hits, Secret Lovers, Circles, Silver Shadow and Masterpiece in the late 80s and early 90s.
To their official Facebook Page the band wrote: ‘It is with great sadness that we have to post the death of Wayne Lewis on 5 June 2025, hold the family in your prayers and respect privacy there’. No cause of death was given.
Fans hurried to the reactions to pay tribute to the deceased singer who burned a ‘legend’ and ‘voice of a generation’.
They wrote: ‘Rip brother …The voice From a generation !!!! My condolences to the family ‘:’ No words !!! Just prayed !! ‘:’ Rest in peace! Talented and beautiful ‘:’ Rip thanks for the music ‘:’ Ooooh wow, I am really sorry to hear this, my condolences to his family. The singer and keyboard player was one of the founders of the New York -based R&B Group who was very successful in the 80s and early 90s (depicted with bandmate Sharon Bryant in 1983)
The band, initially called Newban, launched their first album far back in 1978, but it was only in 1987 that they always landed their first number one single.
The band continued to score hits on both the R&B and pop hit lists in the early 1990s despite countless line-up changes.
Their biggest release of the decade was Masterpiece that reached number 3 in 1992 and led to the group tours that Japan toured.
Wayne Besides brothers David and Jonathan, core members remained from the band, who continued to perform to the tragic death of the singer this week.
