Passengers at one of Australia's largest airports are facing delays after safety protocols were activated at screening checkpoints.
Images from the airport terminal around noon on Wednesday showed lines at security gates stretching all the way to the terminal.
A Gold Coast Airport said an incident had triggered security measures requiring passengers to be re-screened.
'Safety protocols were activated at Gold Coast Airport this morning in relation to an isolated incident where passengers on board one flight had to be re-screened. As a result, operational delays were experienced,” a spokesperson said.
“Gold Coast Airport is working with its airline partners to manage the impact for customers. Operations have resumed, but there will be some flight delays as a result.
'We thank passengers for their patience during this period and will do our best to get them back on the road as quickly as possible.'
Passengers initially assumed a computer glitch was the cause of the chaos in the screening room.
“Well, this is a first. Never had an IT security failure before! This is Gold Coast Airport… the queue is growing by the minute,” said one passenger.
